I lived in Washington during an important season of my life, when I was deep in graduate studies, raising a family, and beginning my clinical work as a therapist. I earned my MSW from the University of Washington–Tacoma and completed my training at Madigan Army Hospital, while living in Spanaway as a military spouse. Those years shaped me, both personally and professionally.
What stands out most from that time isn’t just the learning; it’s the people. I found community among Somali, Cambodian, Latinx, and other immigrant and refugee groups, especially in Tacoma and Seattle. The cultural richness and genuine warmth I experienced left a lasting impression.
And then there’s the land itself. The snow-capped mountains. The glassy lakes. The quiet stillness of the evergreens. The sense of sacred connection to nature that seems to pulse through the entire state. A gentle reminder that healing often begins when we slow down, ground ourselves, and reconnect with something larger than us.
Still, I remember how hard it could feel to stay emotionally energized during those long, gray months. When daylight fades early and motivation slips away, it’s easy to feel disconnected, lethargic, or empty. In those moments, feeling seen and supported can make all the difference.
